Vol. 326 No. 1

Written Answers. - Meath Road Allocations.

436.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money allocated to Meath County Council in 1980 for the turn at Slane Castle on the national secondary road to Drogheda; the amount spent by the council; and, if the full amount was not spent, the reason why.

A grant of £100,000 was allocated to Meath County Council in 1980 for the improvement of the national secondary road at the location referred to by the Deputy. Expenditure on the scheme during that year absorbed the full amount of the grant.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money allocated to Meath County Council in 1980 for maintenance of the national secondary road in Slane; the amount of money spent; and, if the full allocation was not spent, the reason why.

In 1980 a grant of £117,000 was allocated to Meath County Council for national secondary road maintenance. The selection of locations for expenditure of such grants is primarily for decision by the road authority concerned. I understand that no significant road maintenance works were carried out in the village of Slane, because of on-going water supply works which affected both the national secondary and national primary roads through the village. I understand that the council accept that it will be necessary to undertake a programme of maintenance and strengthening works at this location when the water supply scheme has been completed.
