Vol. 326 No. 7

Written Answers. - Dental Service Applications.

159.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that the Eastern Health Board are refusing to provide dental services for some eligible applicants; the action he proposes to take to remedy this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that the position is as stated by the Deputy. Health boards, including the Eastern Health Board, arrange dental services for eligible patients on the basis of agreed priorities. The priority groups consist of children, the aged, the handicapped and expectant and nursing mothers. Services for the relief of pain are provided as an absolute priority for all eligible persons.

These arrangements mean that some eligible persons who are not in the priority groups may experience delays in obtaining treatment. However, I am satisfied that the arrangements make the best possible use of available dental manpower whether in the public dental service or in private practice.
