asked the Minister for Finance if he will give the following figures relating to accommodation which are not available from either the Book of Estimates or the appropriate accounts: (1) the amount of money (a) estimated and (b) expended on the following in each year from 1970 to 1980, inclusive: (i) the construction of (a) new Garda stations and (b) new units of Garda living accommodation, including NBA houses; (ii) the cost of repairs to (a) Garda stations, exclusive of furniture, rents, fuel, light, water, cleaning, etc.; and (b) units of Garda living accommodation exclusive of furniture, rent, rates, fuel, light, water, cleaning, etc. (2) the amount of money estimated for the year 1981 under each of the above headings and (3) the number of (a) new stations and (b) new units of living accommodation constructed in each year from 1970 to 1980, inclusive.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the attached tabular statement.
It is not possible to give a breakdown of the cost of erection as between Garda stations and residences in individual centres as it is the practice to place a single contract in each case. In smaller stations, manned by one officer, the official and living accommodation are provided in the same building. Similarly in relation to maintenance costs it is not feasible to divide estimates and expenditure between stations and units of living accommodation.
