Vol. 326 No. 9

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Women Members.

132.

asked the Minister for Justice the proposals he has for increasing the number of women in the Garda Síochána; whether a recruitment drive for women is planned or under way; the number of women at present in the Garda Síochána and their grades; whether posts at senior level are open to women; and if he will make a statement on the policy on these matters.

Since July 1977 the number of women in the Garda Síochána has been increased from 35 to 135. The current strength consists of five ban-shairsintí and 130 banghardaí, of whom 41 are recruit banghardaí in training.

Ban-ghardaí are at present being recruited from the last entrance competition and present indications are that about 60 further suitable candidates may become available for appointment. The question of further increases in the number of ban-ghardaí will be considered when arrangements are being made for the next entrance competition.

Under the Garda Síochána promotion regulations, women are eligible for promotion to all ranks in the same way as men.
