Vol. 327 No. 10

Written Answers. - Lough Corrib Road Bridge.

49.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he is aware of any proposal, public or private, to erect a road bridge to span Lough Corrib at its narrowest point near Headford, County Galway; and whether he would regard such an undertaking as a suitable one for the involvement of private capital under the Local Government (Toll Roads) Act, 1979.

I am aware that interest has been expressed by Galway County Council in the possibility of the construction of a bridge at the location mentioned by the Deputy. I replied to a question by Deputy Donnellan on this subject on 29 January last (No. 175).

It is a matter for Galway County Council in the first instance to consider whether such a proposal might attract private investment for the purposes of a toll scheme under the provisions of the Local Government (Toll Roads) Act, 1979. I am advised, however, that, having regard to the level of investment involved and the volume of traffic that a bridge at this location would attract, there appears to be little prospect of financing such a project by private investment.
