Vol. 328 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway By-pass Road.

28.

asked the Minister for the Environment when money will be made available for the road to by-pass the village of Oranmore, County Galway.

I have made a grant of £200,000 available to Galway County Council this year for the proposed Oranmore by-pass scheme.

What length of roadway is involved?

I have not got that information.

Is it a pedestrian path?

What is the total cost?

It is estimated at about £5 million.

The Minister has given a very generous contribution.

I want to clarify the position. Galway County Council got all the money they needed. Detailed proposals of the scheme to provide the by-pass at Oranmore for traffic approaching Galway from Limerick and Dublin have been prepared by Galway County Council. The proposals were approved by Galway County Council on 23 March 1981 and were submitted to the Department without delay. Some of the land required for the by-pass will have to be acquired by CPO. It is estimated that construction work will be phased over 1982 and 1983.

An election sweetener.
