asked the Minister for Defence if sub-heads O1 and O2 in relation to aircraft have been reduced from £4,744,100 to £1,230,000; and if he will indicate the cost of acquiring long range surveillance aircraft, ship-borne helicopters and twin-engined rescue helicopters.

I would refer the Deputy to the printed Book of Estimates for 1980 and 1981 for particulars in relation to subheads O1 and O2 of the Defence Estimate. The cost of purchasing aircraft is likely to be as follows: (a) surveillance aircraft — between £1,750,000 and £6,000,000 each; (b) ship-borne helicopters — between £2,000,000 and £3,300,000 each; (c) twin-engined helicopters — approximately £4,000,000 each.
