Vol. 329 No. 7

Written Answers. - Tullamore (Offaly) Vandalism.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the damage which vandals did to private and business premises in Tullamore, County Offaly after a football match on Sunday, 5 July 1981; the number of arrests made on that occasion; if people were physically assulted while going about their business; and if he will give an estimate of the amount of the damage caused on that date.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the damage caused to property in Tullamore on the occasion in question consisted of the breaking of four shop windows and a car window, damage to a car by overturning and damage to a refrigerator. The Garda estimate that the amount of the damage caused was £450.

Apart from the incidents of damage, there were attempts to steal two cars, an assault on a garda and an assault on a woman in the course of the snatching of her handbag. These were the only such incidents that came to the notice of the Garda.

Eight persons were arrested and have been charged in connection with some of the incidents in question.
