Vol. 329 No. 7

Written Answers. - Veterinary Office Dispute.

66.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps he has taken to overcome the problems of farmers in the Sligo-Leitrim area which arise from the dispute in the District Veterinary Office in Sligo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The situation in the Sligo office arises out of industrial action by a civil service staff association which has resulted in the withdrawal of their services by the clerical staff. The office, which deals with the administration of the disease eradication and livestock headage schemes in the Sligo/Leitrim area, is open to the public but only a limited service can be provided at the present time.

I regret the inconvenience which is being caused to farmers in the area but I hope the Deputy and the farmers concerned will appreciate that, until this industrial action ceases, it is not possible to provide a normal service. In the meantime my Department will continue to do whatever is possible in present circumstances to maintain a service for farmers.
