613.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the exchanges in County Donegal which may not be automatic by the end of 1982.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 611, 612 and 613 together.

It is expected that Falcarragh and Killygordon exchanges will be converted to automatic working by the end of this year.

The programme for automatic service in Donegal is being reviewed at present to determine if provision of automatic service throughout the county can be speeded up. Under the current programme, it is planned to provide automatic service at the following exchanges in 1982: Ballintra, Ballygorman, Carndonagh, Carrigart, Donegal, Downings, Fahan, Inch, Inver, Laghey, Lifford, Malin, Manorcunningham, Mountcharles, Moville, Quigley's Point, Rathmullan.

On the basis of the current programme, the following exchanges will not have automatic service by the end of 1982: Annagry, Ardara, Arranmore, Ballybofey, Bunbeg, Burtonport, Carrick, Churchill, Cloghan, Clonmany, Clooney, Culdaff, Creeslough, Doaghbeg, Doochary, Drumkeen, Dungloe, Dunkineely, Fintown, Glencolumbkille, Gleneely, Glenties, Greencastle, Gweedore, Kerrykeel, Kilcar, Killybegs, Kilmacrennan, Kincasslagh, Lettermacward, Muff, Portsalon, Ramelton, Rosbeg, Tamney, Tory Island.

Note: Forecasts for the provision of automatic service are based on the assumption that contract dates for buildings, equipment etc. are adhered to within reasonable limits.

614.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider establishing direct operator dialling in the near future from Dublin to the exchanges in County Donegal which are not included in the automatic conversion programme for 1982.

The possibility of extending the dialling-in facility to the busier manual exchanges in question is being examined. However, having regard to the necessity to concentrate staff effort on the primary objective of converting the exchanges to automatic working, extension of the facility is likely to be limited.

615.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the position in relation to the proposed kiosk for Maghery, Dungloe, County Donegal.

It is proposed to provide a kiosk at Maghery as soon as the volume of other work on hands allows of this being done.

616.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that telephone installations in the Cork area are being curtailed due to shortages of telephones; and if he will take steps to have this matter rectified.

Yes. There is a shortage of Magneto telephone instruments which are used at certain manual exchanges. There is difficulty in procuring these types as they are no longer in general use. It is expected that additional supplies will be available over the next month or so.

617.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the steps being taken to introduce automatic telephone facilities at Templederry, Nenagh, County Tipperary.

The Office of Public Works expect to place a contract for Templederry exchange building about the end of this year. The automatic equipment is on order.

The forecast at this stage is that it should be possible to provide automatic service at Templederry in the first half of 1983.

618.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when his Department proposes to erect an additional telephone kiosk at Newport, County Tipperary.

It is not planned to provide an additional telephone kiosk to serve Newport at present; the area is regarded as being adequately served by the existing kiosk at The Square, Newport, which is not heavily used.

619.

(Wexford) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone, which was applied for four years ago, will be installed for an old age pensioner (details supplied) in County Wexford.

Service was provided recently for another applicant in the general area for whom the necessary linework was not excessive.

It is hoped to convert Ballinamore exchange to automatic working towards the end of 1982. Eight additional trunk circuits to Carrick-on-Shannon will be provided in the first quarter of next year.

Service will be provided to about 30 applicants over the next few months. I regret that it will not be possible to provide service for other applicants until the new automatic exchange is in operation.

Service was restored on 4 November. I regret the delay in effecting repairs which, I understand, was due to an error in identifying the nature of the fault. A rebate of rental is being allowed for the period without service.

642.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person (details supplied) in County Dublin was not provided recently with a telephone service when later applicants in the same locality received a telephone service.

Service was not provided for this applicant because there was no suitable spare cable pair available which could be used to provide service.
