Vol. 330 No. 14

Vote 41: Lands.

I move:

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £500,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1981, for the salaries and expenses of the Irish Land Commission, including certain grants-in-aid.

Is the motion agreed?

Yes, but regretfully we have now no opportunity of debating it. I would ask the Minister to agree a time for at least a very short debate on it at the commencement of Estimates next week.

Is that possible? I will have to be led by the Chair.

That would be a matter for the Whips and for the Ceann Comhairle.

My understanding from the order today was that this would be moved and accepted.

I think it would be moved but there could be no guarantee that it would be accepted. On the matter of its acceptance, if a vote was challenged then that vote would be postponed in accordance with Standing Orders until some date next week. But I understand that Deputy Smith is not opposing the motion directly but has some qualification which he might reiterate.

The Chair will appreciate that the understanding between the Whips was that these Estimates would be completed this afternoon. But as no time was given specifically to this debate my hands are tied and I can only agree on the basis that some small amount of time would be allocated to it next week.

I am sure that qualification is being noted. I am taking it that for the purpose of the order the motion is agreed?

Vote put and agreed to.
