Vol. 331 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Council for the Status of Women.

7.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has any proposals to provide additional financial and other resources to the Council for the Status of Women.

The question of financial and other resources for the Council for the Status of Women is being considered by the Government at present. I will inform the council of the amount of their grant as soon as a decision is taken in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that there are 30 affiliated associations belonging to the Council for the Status of Women representing 1,250,000 Irish women? Will the Minister ensure that his Government give this representative group of women a generous grant to aid them in carrying out their activities? Further, will the Minister ensure that the moneys he gives will be put to good use and that the recommendations of the council as a result of their very valuable work will be heeded by him and his Government?

In reply to the first part of the Deputy's supplementary, I have said that the Government are considering this question in the context of the budget. With regard to the second part, we certainly will give recognition to anything emanating from the Council for the Status of Women in the way of recommendations.

Can the Minister give us an assurance that the amount of the grant will constitute an increase over the corresponding amount they received this year?

I can assure the Deputy that I am fighting for an increase for the Council for the Status of Women.
