53.

asked the Minister for Education if he will now approve the provision of a gymnasium at Clifden community school, Connemara, County Galway: and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 51, 52 and 53 together.

Each class in the school is allocated four periods per week (2? hours) for games and physical education. Games provided include hockey, rugby, gaelic football, tennis, golf and cross country running.

The number of pupils attending Clifden Community School is 340. The outdoor sporting facilities comprise two playing fields and a hard-play area. Should the board of management propose any further outdoor facility, my Department will be happy to consider it.

With regard to the provision of indoor sporting facilities an application for financial assistance under my Department's Community, Youth, Recreational and Employment Programme has been received from the school. My Department are currently examining the applications received and until this process is fully completed I will not be in a position to say which projects may qualify for grant-aid.
