Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Petrol Lead Levels.

379.

asked the Minister for the Environment if there are any technical reports available in his Department which give acceptable safety limits for lead in petrol; and, if so, the levels.

I am not aware of any technical report which sets out such limits. As regards the general problem of lead levels in petrol I would refer the Deputy to my answer to Question No. 23 of 21 October 1981.

380.

asked the Minister for the Environment if there is any information in his Department as to whether the lead content in petrol is controlled in other EEC countries; and, if so, the levels.

EEC Council Directive No. 78/611/EEC of 29 June 1978 provides that the maximum lead content of petrol placed on the Community internal market shall be 0.40 grammes per litre in general. The setting of lower limits is permitted provided that these are not lower than 0.15 grammes per litre. I understand that the limits fixed by the other member states, except the Federal Republic of Germany where a maximum level of 0.15 grammes per litre is prescribed, correspond with the maximum limit of 0.40 grammes per litre prescribed in the directive.
