Vol. 333 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Sorting Office.

16.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to commence building work at the Brian Boru Street Sorting Office/ Coliseum Cinema in Cork.

A study into the feasibility of redeveloping the site suggests that it is too small to meet future needs and alternative solutions are now being examined urgently.

In regard to the Coliseum Cinema, it is so unsafe that the staff refuse to work there. Would the Minister be prepared to refer it to the Minister of State at the Department of Finance with a view to carrying out a survey as to what should be done with this building? The staff refuse to work there and it is now becoming a dangerous structure. It is unsightly, and it is on a national primary route.

My officials will be examining the point the Deputy is making and will come back to him with some reply. My brief does not indicate that this building is in the condition that the Deputy indicates it is in today. But if that is the case and if there is any possible danger I will instruct my officials to carry out an immediate examination and investigation into the allegations made today and I will come back to the Deputy as quickly as possible because I would be as concerned as he is about the possibility of danger.
