Vol. 333 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin Inner City Development.

190.

asked the Minister for the Environment when it is proposed to give full approval for the proposed industrial cluster on the site in Seán McDermott Street, Dublin, in respect of which permission has been sought by the Seán McDermott Street Youth Employment Action Group among others in the area; and if the Government will give every possible support to this project.

As I explained in my contribution to the budget debate, the Government are fully committed to promotion of renewal and community development in the inner city.

The development of the site referred to for industrial purposes is not, however, a matter in which I have a direct function. I understand that the corporation and the IDA are discussing the question.

The site was previously earmarked by the corporation for open space provision as part of their proposals for housing development in the Gardiner Street/Seán McDermott Street general area, part of which proposals have been approved by my Department. The remainder of the proposals and the question of planning to achieve an overall balance in developments in and around the designated area are at present the subject of discussion and consultation between my Department and the corporation. It will be a matter for the corporation to decide on any review of current planning and development proposals for the area that may be appropriate in the light of those discussions.
