The present position in regard to the Inishmore water supply improvement scheme is that acceptance of a certain tender was approved by me on 9 March 1982. I understand that a bond received by Galway County Council from the contractor is being examined by the council and that work may commence in the near future.

The Deputy's question is taken as referring to the Galway Corporation scheme — Galway City West and environs water supply scheme, contract numbers 1 and 3. Contract number 1 commenced in January 1980 and is nearing completion. My Department issued approval to the acceptance of a tender for contract number 3, to Galway Corporation on 27 January 1982. A local loans fund loan of £400,000 was sanctioned for this contract on 31 March 1982.

In March 1981 my Department conveyed approval to Galway Corporation to the seeking of tenders for the mechanical and electrical plant for this scheme to facilitate planning of the civil works. I understand that the plant tenders are at present under examination locally.

Approval to the preparation of contract documents for borehole investigations, dye tracing and float studies in relation to the proposed new pumping station at Southpark, and the proposed outfall from Mutton Island, issued to the local authority on 25 February 1982.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he approves of the continued discharge of untreated raw sewerage into the River Corrib at Claddagh Quay, Galway city and onto the foreshore at South Park Beach, Galway city; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The discharge of sewage at Claddagh Quay, Galway and South Park, Salthill, is a temporary arrangement pending construction of the South Park pumping station, rising main to Mutton Island and outfall pipe from Mutton Island. On completion of this work, treated sewage will be pumped from the new pumphouse at South Park, Salthill, via a rising main to a deep water outfall off Mutton Island. The treatment proposed includes grit removal, coarse screening, maceration, fine screening and diffusion from the deep water outfall. The proposed system of disposal is intended to ensure that neither environmental nor aesthetic problems need be anticipated when the scheme is completed.
