Vol. 334 No. 5

Written Answers. - Student Numbers.

704.

Mr. De Rossa

asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of student places he plans to have available in (a) 1986 and (b) 1991; (b) his Department's estimate of consequent transfer ratio for (a) 1986 and (b) 1991, and (c) his Department's estimate for the consequent enrolment rate as a percentage participation of a given age cohort for (a) 1986 and (b) 1991.

The estimated numbers of higher education places for 1985-86 and 1990-91 are 49,100 and 55,800 respectively.

There are no population projections available for 1986 and 1991 at this time and, accordingly, it is not possible to give information in the form requested. In these circumstances the Department's projections are based on age survival co-efficients as explained in the White Paper on Educational Development particularly Appendix A and Chapter I. The current projection assumed an increase in survival co-efficients between 18 and 19 which presupposes a somewhat higher rate of entry into third level at that time. The initial co-efficient of .563 (average over last two years) increases to terminal co-efficient (1990-91) of .576.

705.
