asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases reported and investigated in 1979, 1980 and 1981 by the Garda where women were victims of murder, physical assault, and rape; and the number of cases which were brought to trial.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report a tabular statement setting out in respect of the years 1979, 1980 and 1981, the number of cases of murder, manslaughter, attempted murder and sexual offences, where the victims were women or young girls, and the number of resultant court proceedings. A breakdown of the figures of other physical assaults according to the sex of the victim is not available. This information would have to be specially compiled from a large number of records at local level and I do not consider that I would be justified in asking the Garda to carry out the task which could be only undertaken at the expense of other duties.
