Vol. 335 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tidal Power Potential.

10.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if a study of the tidal flow between McGilligan Point and Greencastle, at the entrance to Lough Foyle, has been undertaken to determine its potential for the generation of electricity.

During the course of an investigation of the prospects for tidal power generation around the Irish coast the ESB have inspected the location referred to at Lough Foyle. It was found that the average tidal range at this site was about 1.4 metres and that this was not sufficient to merit further investigation.

Taking all of the other factors into consideration it was concluded that the use of the tide at this point would not be an economically viable proposition for electricity generation.

Is the Minister aware that the tidal flow went completely wrong yesterday and he would want to put a little more industry and energy into his efforts if Fianna Fáil are to remain on that side of the House much longer?

(Interruptions.)

The situation of the tidal wave to which the Deputy refers might sweep him out to sea as well as everybody else.

(Interruptions.)

It flowed towards Europe in the right direction. I know there were a lot of people on the other side annoyed about it.
