asked the Minister for Transport the terms of the existing pension scheme in operation for operative grades in CIE indicating the amount of pension in the ten lowest pensions at present in payment side by side with the existing social welfare contributory pension for (a) a single person and (b) a married couple.

The terms of the existing pension schemes in operation in CIE for operative grades, i.e. regular wages staff, are contained in the published statutory schemes, a list of which is furnished as Appendix A to this reply.

The amounts of pensions currently in payment are shown in the following table:

These pensions are not co-ordinated with the social welfare pensions; members of the CIE regular wages staff pension schemes are entitled to the full social welfare pensions.

The current rate of contributory social welfare pension is £40.25 per week for a single person and £65.95 for a married couple with variations upwards depending on recipient's age and age of recipient's wife.

CIE Regular Wages Staff Pension Schemes.

1. Great Southern Railways Company Pension Scheme for Regular Wages Staff as confirmed by the Transport Act, 1944 (section 45) Order, 1945 (SR & O. 1945 No. 55) and amended by an amending scheme confirmed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce on the 31st day of October, 1957 and subsequently further amended by schemes confirmed by Statutory Instruments numbered 57 of 1961, 49 of 1965, 8 of 1967, 59 of 1969, 78 of 1971, 250 of 1974, 289 of 1977 and 75 of 1980.

2. Great Northern Railway Company (Ireland) Pension Fund for Wages Staff mentioned in the Schedule to the Agreement scheduled to the Great Northern Railway Act, 1958 (No. 20 of 1958) as amended by amendment schemes confirmed by Statutory Instruments numbered 53 of 1962, 50 of 1965, 9 of 1967, 60 of 1969, 81 of 1971, 251 of 1974, 291 of 1977 and 76 of 1980.

3. Córas Iompair Éireann Superannuation Scheme for Regular Wages Staff confirmed by SR & O No. 242 of 1945 and subsequently amended by amending schemes confirmed by Statutory Instruments numbered 115 of 1949, 34 of 1955, 226 of 1957, 56 of 1961, 48 of 1965, 7 of 1967, 58 of 1969, 77 of 1971, 252 of 1974, 288 of 1977 and 74 of 1980.
