asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will increase the present maximum £5 penalty for breaching the by-law for operating abattoirs to £500 in order to make operable the new draft by-laws which have been prepared by Dublin Corporation and which will shortly be sent to the appropriate Departments for sanction.

I await receipt of the by-laws referred to by the Deputy. The whole question of conditions at slaughterhouses and abattoirs throughout the country is at present under examination in my Department and one of the matters being considered is the level of penalties for infringements of the law regarding slaughterhouses. In this context I will have the Deputy's suggestion examined.
