Vol. 335 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retiring Departmental Personnel.

13.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of lumpsum and pension payable at 1 May, 1982 in respect of (a) an officer and (b) a servant retiring on that date on a retiring pay of £100 per week with 40 years' service.

(Dublin South-East): The superannuation of local authority employees is governed by the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956, and where applicable, the Superannuation Revision Scheme, 1977.

Under the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956 an officer in the position outlined in the question would receive a lump sum of £6,933.33 and a pension of £50 per week. In similar circumstances a servant would be entitled to a pension amounting to £66.67 per week and no lump sum.

The corresponding figures under the Superannuation Revision Scheme, 1977, provided an option for the scheme was exercised, are £7,800 lump sum and £5 per week pension for officers and also for servants who are not fully insured under the Social Welfare Acts. The pensions of servants fully insured under the latter Acts are co-ordinated with social welfare pensions in respect of service given on or after 27 May 1977. Under this arrangement a servant with 40 years service will qualify for combined local authority and social welfare pensions of not less than half-pay, in addition to the lump sum, the local authority element being £45.05.
