Vol. 335 No. 5

Estimates, 1982. - Vote 48: Social Welfare.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £742,677,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1982, for the salaries and expenses of the Office of the Minister for Social Welfare, for certain services administered by that Office, for payments to the Social Insurance Fund, and for sundry grants.

(Cavan-Monaghan): Obviously, a debate cannot take place on this Estimate now, but I should like to know if the Minister will undertake to move a token Vote later in the year to facilitate a debate on this Vote?

That would be appreciated by this side of the House.

That would be a matter for the Whips but as far as I am concerned it is probable that we will have to have a further Supplementary Estimate for Social Welfare, as usually happens, later in the year. I have no objection if that is necessary.

(Cavan-Monaghan): May I take it that the Minister would not have any objection to a debate?

I will certainly facilitate a debate.

Vote put and agreed to.
