Vol. 335 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

786.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason disability benefit payments have been discontinued to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

The person concerned claimed occupational injury benefit in respect of an incapacity which he attributed to an accident at work on 5 December 1981. On completion of inquiries as to the nature and origin of the incapacity it was accepted that the incapacity was due to an accident at work and the claim was allowed. Payment of injury benefit for the period from 5 December 1981 to 29 April 1982, was made on 29 April 1982, on the basis of information furnished by the employers as to the period of absence from work. Payment after that date was not made because medical evidence of incapacity was not received.

On receipt of the Deputy's inquiry the employers were again contacted and it was confirmed that the claimant is still absent from work by reason of the accident injury and that he has furnished medical certificates to my Department. As, however, he has been quoting an incorrect RSI number the certificates were not associated with his claim. The matter has now been rectified and payment of all benefit due to 4 June 1982 has been made. The claimant has been advised of the correct RSI number and has been requested to quote this number on all medical certificates and other correspondence in connection with his claim.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

The means assessed against the person concerned, who is a postal applicant, for the purpose of his unemployment assistance claim were increased from £19.25 to £44.20 derived from income from land and benefit from his wife's earnings. The weekly amount of unemployment assistance payable from 28 April 1982 was accordingly £6.30 weekly being the maximum rate £50.50 less £44.20 means and payment was made on a separate basis of £3.30 to the claimant and £3.00 to his wife.

The person concerned applied for an appeal form which he returned uncompleted to his local office. It was sent back to him for completion but it has not been returned to-date. The claimant has not been in touch or proved unemployment since 18 May 1982 on which date he furnished his last certificate of unemployment.

Question No. 788 withdrawn.
