Mr. Pattison

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount spent in each of the years 1970 to 1981 inclusive and the estimate for 1982 on the construction and repair of roads in all the counties of Leinster.

Mr. Treacy

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount spent in each of the years 1980 to 1981 and the estimate for 1982 in respect of the construction and repair of roads in all the counties of Munster.

Mr. B. Allen

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money spent in 1979, 1980 and 1981 on the construction and repair of roads in counties Dublin, Limerick, Clare, Cork and Kildare.

The following tables of the amounts expended on construction, improvement, maintenance and repair of public roads (including bridges) in each of the counties in question, in each of the years 1970 — 1980 inclusive, have been compiled from information provided by the road authorities concerned. It is not possible to provide corresponding figures in respect of 1982.

Notes:

1. The figures for each county include expenditure on both rural and urban roads, e.g. the figures for County Cork include expenditure in Cork County Borough and in the Urban Districts of Clonakilty, Cobh, Fermoy, Kinsale, Macroom, Mallow, Midleton, Skibbereen and Youghal, just as the figures for County Dublin include expenditure in Dublin County Borough and Dún Laoghaire Borough and the figures for Tipperary South Riding include expenditure in Clonmel Borough and the Urban Districts of Carrick-on-Suir, Cashel and Tipperary.

2. The figures for 1970-1973 inclusive relate to the financial year ended 31 March; the figures for 1974 relate to the 9-month period 1 April 1974-31 December 1974; the figures for 1975-1981 relate to the financial year ended 31 December.

3. The figures do not include expenditure on public lighting, traffic control, road safety, loan charges or overhead costs.

4. As the figures relate to public roads (roads for which legal responsibility for their maintenance and improvement is vested in road authorities) they do not include expenditure on any works on non-public roads which the road authorities in question may have executed as agent for any public organisation or for any private organisation or individual e.g. any works on non-public roads serving airports, seaports, electricity-generating stations, aviation-control stations, radio-cum-television transmitters, industrial estates, housing estates, mines, bogs, forests, fisheries, farmsteads and places of historic, scenic or recreational attraction.
