Vol. 336 No. 1

Written Answers. - Supply of Arms to Israel.

863.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the Government will demand the cessation of arms supplies by the United States to Israel; and, if not, the reason.

The Government have vigorously condemned the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and have called on Israel to withdraw all its forces immediately and unconditionally from Lebanon.

As a general policy, Ireland does not supply arms to areas of conflict, and we have frequently advocated that other countries should adopt a similar policy.

The Government have been in contact with the US authorities concerning the situation in the Middle East since the Israeli invasion. The Government have made clear their view that there is a great necessity for the US to use all its influence to bring about Israeli withdrawal.
