Vol. 336 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Lotteries.

11.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals to enable local authorities to run lotteries to raise funds.

I do not believe that lotteries run directly by local authorities would involve a significant supplement to their income but I have on open mind on the matter and will consider the question of including a power to engage in lotteries in any future legislation on local authority finance.

Arising from the reply in which the Minister has rejected any immediate proposals for this, what proposals does the Minister have to alleviate Wexford County Council's problem of a £2 million overdraft which they have no way of coping with?

I met Wexford County Council recently and I thought they were quite pleased with the interview. They went off very happy and they got on better than they thought they would. They were looked after; they got money.
