The Southern Health Board, who are responsible for the health services in this area, have indicated that it was decided recently to discontinue the emergency service at this hospital because: (1) many of the cases presenting were appropriate for treatment by general medical practitioners; and (2) the hospital is not staffed or equipped to deal with the more serious cases who are advised to go to the county hospital.
