Vol. 336 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána.

905.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will appoint an extra garda to every station in New Ross district, County Wexford, because of the gross undermanning of the area at present.

The detailed deployment of members of the Force is a matter to be decided primarily by the Garda authorities and the strength assigned to the various stations is reviewed from time to time to take account of changing needs and circumstances.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the current Garda strength at the stations in the New Ross Garda District is the maximum that can be provided at present. They consider that, having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda services, this strength is reasonably adequate to meet the police needs of the area. However, a substantial number of extra gardaí are being recruited this year and, while the precise locations to which they will be allocated have not, as yet, been decided, it can be taken that the needs of the stations in the New Ross district will be considered when the additional manpower is available for assignment to the various centres.

906.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange to have a resident Garda appointed at Urlingford, County Kilkenny.

There is no suitable official accommodation in Urlingford at present and in such cases it is the accepted practice in the Garda Síochána that a member is free to live where he chooses, provided he does not live at an unreasonable distance from his station. The Office of Public Works are examining the possibility of erecting a new station and residence on the site of the existing station at Urlingford but any new accommodation would not be available for some time. Accordingly, it is not possible at this stage to arrange for a garda to reside in Urlingford.

I should perhaps add, for the Deputy's information, that I understand from the Garda authorities that the vacancy for a garda at Urlingford station will be filled this week.

907.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of sergeants and gardaí in each of the stations in County Louth at 30 April, 1982; the corresponding figures at 30 April, 1981; and if any increases in strength are proposed during the coming six months.

Particulars of the number of sergeants and gardaí at each of the stations situated in County Louth on 30 April 1982 and on 30 April 1981 are as follows:—
