Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sale of Poultry Order.

526.

asked the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will make an order under the Consumer Information Act requiring poultry retailers to indicate whether the poultry has at any stage been frozen.

I will be making regulations shortly to implement EEC Directive 79/112 otherwise known as the Food Labelling Directive. Under these regulations foodstuffs will have to show the name of the product and particulars as to its physical condition or the specific treatment which it has undergone — for example, powdered, freeze-dried, deep-frozen, concentrated, smoked, where the omission of such information could create confusion in the mind of the purchaser.

In these circumstances I do not consider it necessary to make an order under the Consumer Information Act.
