Vol. 336 No. 7

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Scheme.

484.

asked the Minister for Education if he will pay a capital grant plus financial aid under the youth employment scheme to Burncourt Community Centre, Cahir, County Tipperary.

In November 1981, Burncourt Community Council made application to my Department for capital grant assistance, towards the development of community recreational facilities at Burncourt, under the community, youth, recreational and employment programme. This application was not among those selected for assistance by the former Minister of State, who allocated the entire sum of money made available to my Department for the purpose of this programme.

My Department have no record of an application from this group for financial assistance under the temporary grant scheme for youth employment. I have, however, arranged for details of the scheme togethere with the appropriate application form to be sent to the council's secretary. Should the council decide to submit an application under this scheme, I will ensure that it will receive every consideration in my Department.

asked the Minister for Education if he will pay a capital grant plus financial aid under the youth employment scheme to Cloneen Community School, Clonmel, County Tipperary.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to Cloneen Sports and Social Club, Cloneen, Clonmel, County Tipperary, which made application to my Department in November 1981 for a capital grant towards the construction of club facilities, under the community, youth, recreational and employment programme. The position is that this club was not among the applicant groups selected for assistance under the programme by the former Minister of State, who allocated the entire sum of money made available to my Department for the purposes of the programme. However, in a letter of 2 March 1982 to the secretary of Cloneen Sports and Social Club, the former Minister of State announced that he was prepared to approve them for a grant under the Department's youth employment scheme. This scheme is completely independent of the Department's capital grant programme — the community, youth, recreational and employment programme — and is operated on entirely different lines.

In view of this decision, my Department wrote to the club secretary on 16 March 1982 stating that their application for capital grant assistance could not be acceded to and enclosing the necessary data for application under the temporary sport scheme for youth employment. To date the necessary completed application form for assistance under this scheme has not been returned by this club. However, should the club decide to submit an application under this scheme, I will ensure that it will receive every consideration in my Department.
