Vol. 337 No. 9

Written Answers. - Union Dues.

137.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that a number of firms who have agreements with their unions providing for the payment of union dues by means of a check off system have on occasion retained the moneys collected by this system and not passed them on directly to the unions concerned in accordance with the terms of the agreement, and have kept moneys within their own firm and that consequently some members have been deemed to be out of benefit with their union and have found themselves in difficult positions in relation to their status as potential delegates at annual delegate conferences; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have not received any complaints concerning the alleged abuses which the Deputy describes. Arrangements for the operation of a check off system are negotiated between the employers and the trade unions concerned and accordingly any complaints arising in this area should be taken up with the parties directly concerned.
