Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

221.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the new digital exchange in Naas, County Kildare, will be brought into operation; and the reason for the delay in bringing it into operation in view of the fact that it was scheduled to enter service in November 1981.

Work necessary to bring the exchange into service is now nearing completion. Assuming no further problems arise, and none are foreseen at this stage, the exchange should be ready for service within the next month or so.

A number of factors have contributed to the delay in bringing the new digital exchange in Naas into service. There were problems in the development of some ancillary equipment and these took longer to resolve than had been envisaged. There was also delay on the part of the contractor concerned in providing and installing trunk route equipment without which an acceptable standard of service could not be granted; this was compounded by industrial action taken by the contractor's staff.
