Vol. 338 No. 3

Written Answers. - Agriculture Statistics.

379.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will provide in relation to the Government's White Paper The Way Forward which was published on Thursday, 21 October 1982, figures on the same basis as Table 2 of Chapter VI for the years 1960 to 1982, inclusive.

The material requested is not available on a comparable basis and indeed because of definitional changes over the 20-year period the conversion of the available data would not give strictly comparable results.

The following tables give the data on the basis of market prices:

Notes:

1 Gross agricultural output including value of changes in livestock numbers.

2 Net agricultural output including value of changes in livestock numbers.

3 1973-81 data was calculated on a net VAT recording basis.

4 Employment in agriculture, forestry and fishing. It should be noted that the estimates for 1975 onwards are based on the results of the bi-annual series of labour force surveys initiated in that year whereas the estimates for the period prior to 1975 are based on census of population results with estimates for inter censal years based on trend indicators. As the labour force survey involves a number of differences in methodology and in definitions which effect the measurement of the labour force, the survey results are not strictly comparable with the census based figures.
