Vol. 338 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Marital Status Statistics.

8.

asked the Taoiseach when the statistics dealing with the marital status of people as recorded in the 1981 census will become available; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is expected that Volume II of the results of the 1981 Census of Population, containing detailed age and marital status classifications, will be published in early 1983.

By the end of 1982, however, advance estimates of a summary nature based on an analysis of a 5 per cent sample of census returns and covering a number of census topics, including marital status, will be available.

Can the Minister indicate whether under the category of marital status the category of "separated" and/or "divorced" will be clearly listed so as to establish figures for both of those categories?

I think that is the intention. It used to be included under "Others". I think it is the intention to break it down into various categories.

Does the Minister know not what the intention is but whether a decision has been taken to print clearly the final results in relation to those people who listed themselves as either separated or divorced? Will the final information appear in that format?

My information is that from the 1979 tables this will be broken down but I will confirm this for the Deputy.

Could the Minister confirm in writing precisely what is proposed and whether it is the same as 1979 or more elaborate?

Following 1979, the previous Government asked for an elaboration on the information presented and that will happen prior to the end of 1982.
