Vol. 338 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - Unemployment Figures.

9.

asked the Taoiseach the number on the unemployment register at all employment exchanges in County Westmeath in (i) October, 1981 and (ii) October, 1982 and the percentage under 25 years of age in each case.

10.

asked the Taoiseach the total number on the unemployment register at all employment exchanges in County Longford in (i) October 1981 and (ii) October 1982; and the percentage under 25 years of age in each case.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 9 and 10 together and to circulate a statement showing the information sought in respect of each local employment office in Westmeath and Longford respectively on 24 September 1982, the latest date for which the information is available, and on the corresponding date in 1981.

Following is the statement:

Total number of persons and percentage under 25 years of age on the Live Register at each Local Employment Office in (i) Westmeath and (ii) Longford on 24 September, 1982 and 25 September, 1981 respectively.

I quite understand that the reply to Question No. 10 should be circulated but there are only five figures in the reply to Question No. 9. Could the Minister give those five figures?

County Westmeath — 2,481 at 24 September 1982 and 1,844 at 25 September 1981. County Longford — 1,487 at 24 September 1982 and 1,126 at 25 September 1981.

Will the Minister not admit that Fianna Fáil's number one promise during the last election was to provide work for our people, especially young people? What has gone wrong that there is an increase of over 50 per cent?

This is a statistical question which does not warrant further questions, but the Deputy can put down a separate question.

I did ask what action the Government intend to take to provide work and that was left out.
