Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Petrol Lead Content.

187.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if the petrol which will now be purchased by the petrol companies from the Whitegate oil refinery will comply with the EEC minimum standards on lead content; and the exact lead content of the petrol being refined at the refinery.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that in contrast to the position prior to State acquisition of the refinery, Whitegate is now producing petrol in full conformity with the EEC standard of a maximum permissible level of 0.4 grammes of lead per litre and that all supplies of petrol purchased from the INPC by the oil marketing companies since Whitegate resumed operation on 6 September 1982 accorded with this standard. The derogation which Ireland has hitherto enjoyed from the EEC as regards lead content of petrol is not now accordingly being availed of.
