Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Illegal Salmon Fishing.

216.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if, in view of the recent statement by his Minister of State about stamping out illegal salmon fishing, he will state the practical steps being taken to achieve this.

The Central Fisheries Board and the seven regional fisheries boards, which were set up in October, 1980, have statutory responsibility for the enforcement of the laws against illegal salmon fishing. I am satisfied that the boards with their whole-time chief officers are providing a significantly improved salmon fishery protection service. In addition, the resources of the Naval Service and the Garda will continue to be used on this work.

In 1982 the Central Fisheries Board chartered a fishing trawler on a trial basis for salmon protection work. Consideration is being given to the employment of additional trawlers for this purpose in future years. I am keeping the matter under review and I will take appropriate steps as required.
