Vol. 339 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National School Extensions.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to commence the extension to St. Finan's national school, Falcarragh, County Donegal.

It is too early to say when work will commence. Tenders were invited in July 1982 but the response was not satisfactory and the board found it necessary to re-invite tenders in December 1982. The closing date for receipt of tenders was 1 February 1983 and the tenders received are now being examined.

Mr. Leonard

It would appear that the Department of Finance are using us. We have a number of contractors in Donegal who would be interested.

A question please, Deputy.

Are the Department of Finance re-tendering for the sake of re-tendering? This is the second time I have received this stock answer.

It is not a stock answer but a fact. The tenders were not satisfactory. The commissioners are spending public money and they must be satisfied that they are getting value.

Is the Minister of State aware that the children must now travel two miles to Gortahork? This does not help their education. Will he expedite this matter?

The closing date was 1 February and if a satisfactory tender is received we will proceed immediately. A recommendation will be sent to the Department of Education.

We are having repetition.

I am generally orderly and any question I ask is done with great sincerity and with the best interests of Donegal at heart.

I do not wish to criticise the Deputy's questions but rather their length.

If a satisfactory tender is received in the near future when does the Minister of State expect that the work will commence?

If there is a satisfactory tender we will send a recommendation to the Department of Education. There will be no delay as far as the Office of Public Works are concerned.

Can I take it that work will start this year?

I cannot give any undertaking on that.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Finance the present position concerning the proposed extension to Rahan boys' national school, Tullamore, County Offaly.

The Office of Public Works have prepared sketch plans for the proposed extension to Rahan boys' national school, Tullamore, County Offaly and have sent them to the manager of the school to enable him to apply for planning permission. Advanced planning cannot be initiated until the planning permission is received and a grant is sanctioned by the Department of Education.
