Vol. 340 No. 3

Written Answers. - Inchicore (Dublin) CIE Works.

213.

asked the Minister for Transport if it is intended to proceed with the joint CIE-British rail engineering project for the construction of mainline passenger coaches at the CIE works at Inchicore, Dublin; the capital allocated to CIE for the purpose; when it is proposed to start construction of the coaches; and when it is expected that the first completed coaches will be available for use.

An exceptionally high capital allocation of £60 million has been provided in the 1983 budget for CIE. I am very happy to tell the Deputy that I have personally seen to it that this allocation contains sufficient provision to enable the coach-building programme at Inchicore to be commenced later this year.

The contracts have been placed by CIE in connection with the project for the construction of mainline passenger coaches. I have been informed by CIE that the first train with the new coaches is planned to go into service by April 1984.
