Vol. 340 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal School Transport.

26.

asked the Minister for Education if school transport facilities will be sanctioned for two families (details supplied) in County Donegal.

I understand that the pupils in question applied for school transport during the course of the current school year when school transport accommodation on the relevant route had already been fully allocated. While every effort is made to facilitate late applicants for school transport, they cannot be guaranteed the facility where substantial additional cost would be involved. These pupils will be taken into account when arrangements are being made for school transport in the coming school year.

In view of the fact that there are eight children fully entitled to free school transport, is the Minister not under an obligation to provide school transport for these schoolchildren immediately?

I am not fully aware of the situation, but it seems harsh. I will have the matter examined at the earliest possible opportunity. I understand that the case involved was a late application. The cost involved is fairly severe but that is not sufficient justification for depriving the children of transport. I will be considering alternative means or making other suggestions to the families concerned.

27.

asked the Minister for Education when she will make a decision in relation to a term ticket for a student (details supplied) in County Donegal.

Fare-paying facilities have been sanctioned for the pupil in question to Teevog national school.

Could I ask the Minister when this request was made by CIE to the Department of Education?

My information is that it was made on 18 October 1982.

The Minister might move on from that one.

It would not be very favourable.
