Vol. 340 No. 10

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

182.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the plans and the time scale he has to improve the appalling telephone service which people in the town of Skerries, County Dublin, have to endure.

It is planned to replace the existing exchanges at Skerries with a new telephone exchange before the end of the year. In the meantime special measures have been taken to improve the quality of service by carrying out a special overhaul of the exchanges there and of the exchange in Dublin through which calls to and from Skerries are routed. This has improved the service.

In addition, rerouting of the circuits between Skerries and Dublin to provide greater diversity in the event of cables being out of service and improving the quality of transmission in these cables are in hands. It is expected this programme of improvement will be completed within the next six to eight weeks.
