Vol. 342 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Cork New Housing.

645.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has further plans for the building of new houses for Fermoy Urban District Council, County Cork; if so, the number of houses; the amount of money to be sanctioned; if he is aware of the chronic housing shortage in Fermoy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

646.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has further plans for the building of new houses by Cork County Council at Fermoy, County Cork; if so, the number; the amount of money to be sanctioned; if he is aware of the chronic housing shortage in Fermoy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 645 and 646 together.

Under devolved procedures, it is a matter for each local authority to plan and initiate any housing scheme of 60 houses or less, having regard to the housing needs in its functional area and to the capital resources available.

According to a recent return from Fermoy Urban District Council, they have now 208 approved applications for local authority housing. I have asked the council to consider integrating some family type housing at a site at Emmet Street, Fermoy, where 11 elderly persons dwellings were proposed, together with their proposals for a 19-house scheme at Oliver Plunkett Hill which is at present being planned. These proposals will receive urgent attention when received in my Department.

I have no details of the numbers of approved applicants seeking local authority housing from Cork County Council in the Fermoy area. However there is a scheme of 29 houses at present under construction at Duntahane, Fermoy, for the county council. There are no proposals from Cork County Council before my Department for further local authority housing in this area.
