asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of the number of travelling families in each local authority area; the proposals for their settlement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Travellers' Families.
Details regarding the number of travelling families in each local authority area are in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Report. The information is derived from a count carried out by local authorities on 16 November 1982.
Following examination of the count figures, I wrote to each city and county manager requesting a report showing to what extent travellers have made applications for housing, how many of the families are on approved housing lists and the action to be taken regarding the remainder. Managers were also asked to indicate their intentions, in the light of the count, regarding the programme to meet the need for serviced sites. When replies have been received from all managers, the need for further action will be considered.
As regards making a statement on the matter, I would refer the Deputy to the statement of policy which I made in reply to Question No. 402 on 8 March 1983. I might add that the Report of the Travelling People Review Body has now been completed and the Government have set up a review body comprising the Ministers of State at the Departments of the Environment, Justice, Finance, Labour, Health and Social Welfare, and Education with a view to ensuring urgent consideration of the recommendations
