Vol. 343 No. 4

Written Answers. - Non-Aligned Nations Conferences.

603.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the contact there has been with the movement of non-aligned nations since Ireland attended the 1975 conferences as an observer.

Ireland has not attended as an observer at any conferences of the non-aligned movement since the foundation of the movement in 1961.

Ireland recognises the importance of the non-aligned movement, which is one of the most influential movements in the Third World today, representing 101 nations. We have had informal contacts with prominent members of the movement over many years, particularly at the United Nations where the non-aligned movement is especially active. Ireland, while not participating in any of the conferences of the non-aligned movement, has followed the proceedings and outcome of these conferences with considerable interest.
