Vol. 343 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take item No. 11 and in item No. 11, Votes 34 and 35 (resumed), 49 and 39.

On the Order of Business, would the Taoiseach have any proposals to set up an inquiry into the allegations of jobbery in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, and when he is on that will he also investigate the Department of Defence——

That does not arise.

——where Deputy Cooney was responsible for appointing —

(Interruptions.)

I am asking Deputy Leyden to resume his seat. He is out of order.

I would like to raise on the Adjournment the matters referred to by Deputy Leyden.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Andrews.

On the Order of Business, recently the Minister for Trade, Commerce and Tourism indicated that he was going to bring forward legislation to deal with the abuse of limited liability and he said that he would have it before the recess. I wonder how soon it will be possible to bring that legislation before the House.

Work is in progress on this very complex and important legislation and it is hoped to publish it before the summer recess. However, it is not proposed to take it during this session but it will be available for people to consider and reflect on during the recess with a view to its implementation in legislation in the autumn.

Would the Taoiseach indicate to the House when it is proposed to announce the date of the proposed Referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution?

No. It is under consideration. The Government have not taken a decision on it.

Would the Minister for the Environment like to inform the Dáil what he intends to do regarding the suggestion from Dublin Corporation that 99 per cent of the premises in Dublin are not complying with safety standards as far as fire hazards are concerned?

It does not arise on the Order of Business.

It should.

Perhaps, but it does not.

The Minister for the Environment is smiling and laughing. That is making a joke of a serious situation.

I would like to raise on the Adjournment the question of an allocation of £166,000 made to the people of Finglas in respect of the building of a community and recreational sports facility which has not been proceeded with.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Tunney.

Could the Minister for Finance tell us how he intends to select 20,000 farmers whom he claims will receive——

That does not arise on the Order of Business. The Deputy should be serious.

I am very serious because 20,000 farmers will come into the tax net this year. I would like to know how——

That does not arise on the Order of Business.

I would like to raise on the Adjournment the increased incidence of attacks on elderly people in Dublin city.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Brady.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the proposal to double VEC fees.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy De Rossa.
