Vol. 343 No. 10

Written Answers. - US Deportation Threat.

645.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware of the threat to deport the distinguished writer, Dr. Denis Brutus, from the United States to South Africa where he would face certain imprisonment and possible death; if he will urge the US Government to allow him to remain in the United States; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that Dr. Brutus has applied for political asylum in the United States and that several hearings have been held to consider his case. Another hearing is scheduled to take place on 18 July. The process involved is quite lengthy and even if the current hearings find in favour of the deportation of Dr. Brutus he will have the right to appeal, even as far as the US Supreme Court. I also understand that in the event of deportation it is unlikely that Dr. Brutus would be forced to return to South Africa.

Since, as I have explained, the matter is the subject of continuing legal proceedings in the United States and since Dr. Brutus is not an Irish citizen it would be quite inappropriate for the Government to intervene in the matter.
