Vol. 343 No. 10

Written Answers. - Income Tax Refunds.

711.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of money owing to clients, who have been assessed for income tax, and who have paid and are now claiming a refund of tax; and the total money owing in refunds as income tax to clients.

Presumably, the Deputy has in mind cases where taxpayers have been assessed to income tax but have appealed against the assessments. Pending determination of an appeal, a taxpayer is required to pay either the amount assessed or the amount he considers to be properly due. If, on determination of the appeal, the amount paid is shown to be in excess of the amount properly due the excess is repaid with interest.

The amount of income tax so repaid in the 12 months ended 31 May 1983 was £17,692,105. Information is not available as to the amount which will fall to be repaid on foot of assessments still under appeal.

712.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of people who have paid capital acquisitions tax in order to get their certificates of discharge so that they can get the necessary finance from financial institutions; the amount of money now owing to them in refunds due to over payments; and the number of clients.

It is not possible to supply the information requested as records are not kept in such a manner as to enable this to be done.

However, the total amount of capital acquisitions tax repaid in the year 1982 was £202,459 involving 202 cases.

713.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax rebate will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that, due to difficulty in the tax office in ascertaining the taxpayer's earnings and tax deducted in three separate employments in the year 1981-82, the repayment in this case was, regrettably, delayed. A cheque for the refund due will, however, issue shortly.
