Vol. 343 No. 11

Written Answers. - Concrete Products.

637.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the number of samples of (a) ready mix concrete and (b) concrete products sampled for quality in 1982; (c) the number of samples found deficient; and (d) the number of prosecutions.

The Institute for Industrial Research and Standards provides a quality assurance and control service for concrete and concrete products to construction consultants and contractors. The results of tests carried out by the Institute are interpreted by the structural designer involved in a project, not by the Institute.

In 1982, 46,000 concrete cubes, 700 cores of cast ready mix concrete and 2,500 concrete blocks were tested by the IIRS. There are no mandatory standards for ready-mix concrete or concrete products generally. Accordingly, the question of prosecutions does not arise.
